Ugly green ornament

Ugl Ornament

This was a present on first arriving in New Zealand to take up a new job. Itis a slipcast green ornament and it was a gift from a senior member of the Maori community. It represents a kind of hook, a good luck symbol… if you can always fish you can always have food. It also symoblises a kind of shark tooth. It embodies wonderful ideas, but is absolutely revolting. "It was the most horrible thing you can imagine".

"I gave it to my daughter to put as an ornament in her bedroom. So she has it in her bedroom, and every time I look at it I kind of feel gulity cause I know that she only got it because I didn’t want it."
